"Loko," a high-energy drink fused with caffeine and alcohol, was readily available to underage convenience store patrons, and a favorite for binge drinkers. When teen deaths began to be attributed to the product, communities were pressured for tougher regulations. Many stores voluntarily removed them from their shelves.

Republican strategist Karl Rove, who helped organize groups who spent millions of dollars for a midterm election upset, told his fossil fuel and drilling pals at a shale-gas conference that their worries were over. "Climate (meaning the issue of climate change and environmentalists' hopes of regulating polluters) is gone!"

'McPsycho' Cartoon Depicting Bob McDonnell's Visit to Tea Party Rally

When Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell announced he was planning to attend a Tea Party rally featuring Sarah Palin, I couldn't help but picture him taking Miss Virginia to meet "Mother." The original on this cartoon was donated to the Library of Virginia after they invited me to speak at one of their conferences.

Mass Epicenter


"Mass Epicenter" [published 01/23/10]

Through a special (and controversial) election, Ted Kennedy's Senate seat was filled by Republican Scott Brown. To add insult to injury, it happened on the 1st anniversary of President Obama's inauguration, from an electorate angered with the economy and Obama's healthcare reform. So, when around the same time, a small, barely detectible earth quake hit the Washington area, I thought it provided a humorous twist to the news.
